Dr Alan J Hakim
Consultant Rheumatologist, hypermobility, ankylosing spondylitis and Ehlers Danlos syndrome specialist. Advisor to the Hypermobility Syndrome Association (HMSA).
Dr Hakim trained in Medicine at Cambridge University & Addenbrooke’s Hospital; then Medicine & Rheumatology at UCH, London, followed by an Arthritis Research Campaign Clinical Fellowship undertaken at St Thomas’ Hospital, before becoming a Consultant Physician & Rheumatologist at Whipps Cross University Hospital in 2001.
Over the ensuing ten years, as Lead Clinician he worked to sustain & develop a high-class Rheumatology & Osteoporosis service, including a large portfolio of clinical trials in state-of-the-art medicines. I am a Principle & Chief Investigator for the UK in several international clinical trials.
Education & research are an important part of his career with 90 publications to date, including chapters in 4 major textbooks & co-authorship of 5 1st Edition books; the Oxford Handbook of Rheumatology 3rd Edition published in Sept. '11.
Clinical Management is also an integral part of his portfolio. In 2008 he was appointed Lead Clinician for Emergency Medicine & awarded ‘Advanced Medical Leader’ with the British Association of Medical Managers. Other roles have included; Chair, Medical Staff Association at Whipps Cross; Council Member, British Society for Rheumatology; Medical Advisor to the EDS Support Group & HMSA charities; advisor to the Arthritis Rheumatism Musculoskeletal Alliance on integrated care; & various advisory Boards.
He was appointed Director of Strategy & Business Improvement in '09. His roles include support for the Implementation Executive of 'Health for North East London' Programme, & facilitating & implementing integrated services between Secondary Care, Community, & Clinical Commissioning Groups across a number of service re-designs in medical & surgical specialties.
Dr Hakim started the PG programme in Translational Medicine, Edinburgh University in October '11.
In November '11 he was awarded Hon Senior Lecturer status in Experimental Medicine and Rheumatology, Queen Mary, University of London, & Barts & The London School of Medicine & Dentistry.
