Mr McDermott has a specialist interest in the treatment of sports injuries of the knee, as well as the management of hip and knee arthritis.

He has extensive academic interests, having published widely and presented at over 60 national and international research meetings, including many invited lectures.

He was awarded a Master of Surgery Higher Degree from Imperial College for his work on the Biomechanics of Meniscal Transplantation, and in 2003 he was awarded the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) President’s Medal for his research into Meniscal Repair. Mr McDermott is an Honorary Professor Associate in the Brunel University School of Sport & Education and is Honorary Secretary of the UK Meniscal Study Group.

Mr McDermott is a member of the BASK / National Blood Service (NBS) Soft Tissue Allograft Group, and has extensive experience in the use of meniscal and tendon allografts in knee reconstruction surgery, being the first surgeon in Greater London to have performed Menaflex Collagen Meniscal Implant surgery and one of only a very small number of surgeons in the UK regularly performing meniscal transplantation.
