Dr Lucy Ward MBBS BSc FRCA FFPMRCA
As a Chronic Pain Consultant, Dr Ward specialises in treating patients with ongoing pain from many causes. This will include those with back pain and neck pain , ongoing pain following surgery, pain as a result of nerve injury, limb pain from complex regional pain syndrome or RSD, widespread pain, and many others. Dr Ward’s aim is to treat the patient as a whole, looking at not only the pain itself but also the pervasive effects of the pain on the person and their day to day life. This will include a careful history including psychosocial history, examination and investigations as necessary. Once a diagnosis is established she will then take the patient through a clear explanation for the pain and the treatment options available including supporting the patient in developing a self management strategy. Treatment will include management of the appropriate medications, injections such as facet joint injection/denervation, epidurals and nerve root blocks, intravenous regional blocks and other nerve blocks. Close liaison with other disciplines such as physiotherapy is frequently very important in these patients who are often deconditioned and require extensive support and encouragement. Dr Ward is a consultant at the Royal Free Hospital where she is the Clinical Lead for the Pain Management Services. She qualified from UCL Medical school in 1996 and then went on to complete her anaesthetic training at the St Georges Hospital School of Anaesthesia. Her training in pain management took her to Chichester and Hurstwood Park Neurological Hospital, and also included a year’s fellowship at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre in Toronto, Canada.
