Dr Richard Rees MB, BCh, FRCP
Dr Richard Rees was appointed Consultant Rheumatologist to St Mary’s Hospital in 1992 and he has been head of the Rheumatology service there for the last 10 years.
After training in General Medicine he was awarded a 2 year ARC research fellowship investigating neurogenic influences on arthritis in the Departments of Rheumatology and Neuroendocrinology at Westminster Hospital. He has published and presented many papers on the interaction between the nervous system, neuropeptides and stress on the rheumatic diseases. He then undertook specialist training in Rheumatology and General Internal Medicine as Senior Registrar at Charing Cross Hospital.
Dr Rees has a busy NHS clinical practice based at St Mary’s Hospital. He has established specialist services and clinics for complex upper limb pains, inflammatory back pain, severe inflammatory arthritis and a fast track service for patients with reactive arthritis.
He is Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College School of Medicine. As well as teaching undergraduates he is a trainer of specialist trainees in Rheumatology, Sports Medicine and General Practice.
He supervises the MDT’s with Extended Scope Practitioners working within the CATT service commissioned by NHS Westminster. He leads a research programme investigating the role of triggering infections in reactive arthritis.
Dr Rees is a Council Member of the British Society for Rheumatology and he sits on the Clinical Affairs Committee of that organisation working with BHPR, ARMA and other agencies to promote best clinical practice and highest quality of care for patients with musculoskeletal diseases.
